Everything you might want to know about how we work, where your support goes and how to get involved.
About 501 Collective
What is 501 Collective?
501 Collective is a US charity which partners with small nonprofits around the world and helps their good work go further. We focus on organizations working in places shaped by conflict, poverty or limited opportunity and we help strengthen the work they already lead. Founded in 2021, we work alongside 17 partner nonprofits, and our travelers and projects have reached 32 countries.
How do you choose your partners?
We build relationships first. We spend time with leaders, learn their work and look for clarity, integrity and long term commitment. Each partnership grows from trust and shared purpose, so we only take on new partners we have come to know ourselves.
What does your support look like?
We offer content, fundraising strategy, volunteers and organizational guidance. Our goal is long term sustainability, not short projects which create dependency (unless in rare cases, such as immediate war refugee support).
Do you run your own programs?
No. Our partners lead the work. We support their vision and help secure the tools they need to serve their communities well.
Donations and Financials
Where does my donation go?
Your donation supports the work of our partners through project funding, storytelling, volunteer coordination and long term support. We use resources carefully and stay transparent in every step.
Do you take a percentage?
No. We keep our costs lean and fund our operations through operation specific donations. All public donations support projects and the work which makes those projects possible.
Are donations tax deductible?
Yes. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so your gifts can be deducted on US tax returns as the law allows. You will receive a receipt for each donation.
How do I access past receipts?
You can access all receipts through our donor portal at donor.501collective.org.
How does monthly giving work?
Monthly donors join The Village, a community of people who support our work with steady commitment. You can adjust or cancel your subscription at any time through the donor portal.
Partnerships
How does a nonprofit become a partner?
We get to know leaders before anything is formalized. We learn their story, understand their needs and see how our support can serve their long term goals. We support a limited number of partners so we can stay present and connected.
Do you charge small nonprofits for your services?
No. Our services are free for small nonprofits.
Do you offer consulting for larger nonprofits?
Yes. Larger organizations can hire us for consulting in content creation, website support and organizational strategy. Revenue from this work strengthens our mission across the world.
Why do you offer consulting services?
We support small nonprofits at no cost, so consulting creates steady revenue which protects the quality of our free support and keeps it sustainable.
Who are your consulting services for?
We work with medium and large nonprofits who want help with content creation, website support or organizational strategy. These services are tailored to leaders who want clear guidance and practical tools.
How is consulting different from your partner support?
Our partners receive our services for free, so more of their resources go straight to their work. Consulting is a paid service built for organizations with larger budgets who benefit from deeper or ongoing work together.
Can consulting clients become partners?
Consulting and partnerships serve different purposes. Consulting supports specific needs. Partnerships grow from long term relationships, trust and shared commitment in the places where our work is focused.
Trips and Volunteers
Do you bring volunteer teams to your partners?
Yes. Our teams support local leaders in practical ways. Each trip is shaped by real needs identified by the nonprofit, not activities created for visitors.
Who can join a trip?
Most trips are open to adults and older students depending on the location and nature of the work. Each trip has its own requirements.
How do you ensure safety on trips?
We work closely with our partners who know their communities well. We plan carefully, stay aware of local conditions and make decisions with safety as our priority.
Storytelling and Media
Why do you create photo and video content?
Clear storytelling helps nonprofits share their work with accuracy and confidence. It supports fundraising, communication and long term sustainability with those who can’t physically visit their projects.
How do you approach ethical storytelling?
We prioritize joy because people are more than their circumstances. Our goal is to reflect the full and real lives of the communities we support, not reduce them to moments of hardship.
Fundraising and Peer Campaigns
How do fundraisers work?
Anyone can launch a fundraiser to support a partner or project. We provide tools, guidance and the structure needed for a clear and effective campaign.
Do you take a percentage of funds raised through peer campaigns?
No. All raised funds go toward the work described in the campaign. The only percentage is taken by the third party fundraising platform and credit card transaction fees, neither of which we see or have any control over.
Miscellaneous
Can I visit a partner on my own?
Some partners can host visitors but this depends on local conditions and the work they are doing at the time. Reach out to us and we can guide you.
Do you work with businesses?
Yes. We partner with businesses through business partnerships and Consulting. These partnerships strengthen our work and create room for long term support.
